Susquehanna Carving

This was a special shoot for me. When I heard Gunner Kennels was going to feature the Susquehanna River for their fourth flyway series, I knew it would have deep ties to the history of American waterfowl hunting and decoy carving.

Meeting Charles Jobe and being in his woodshop with all the dust, noise, and smells brought me back to a lot of fond memories. My grandfather was an incredible wood carver. Most of his work was hyper-realistic birds and he was a real expert at infusing his avians with a little personality. My dad is also a woodworker, and I have many memories of our home filled with wood chips and sawdust from the full-size carousel horse he carved when I was little. Recently, I even got into carving a bit myself, and have started whittling my own little creatures; mostly mushrooms and roosters!

It is shoots like this that feed my soul. Drawing on childhood experiences and building on that love and nostalgia always leads to something great!
